Common Questions, Professional Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Whether you’re scheduling your first piano tuning or have owned pianos for years, questions are a natural part of maintaining your instrument. Below are answers to some of the most common questions about piano tuning, repairs, maintenance, and care to help you better understand how to keep your piano performing at its best.

How often should a piano be tuned?

New pianos need a little extra TLC while the new strings stretch and the wood settles a bit. Generally in the first year most pianos need to be tuned three or four times in the first year.  After that, tuning once or twice a year is typical.

It depends on the condition of the piano.

Yes.  I understand that it is difficult to take time away from your busy work week.

I do.  I love all pianos!

Probably.  However, it’s best to wait a few weeks to let the piano settle into its new home and adjust to any changes in humidity, temperature, possible uneven floors, etc.

It is important to choose a location that isn’t drafty and has stable humidity.  Ideally, there should not be much temperature fluctuation and a spot that isn’t in direct sunlight will keep the wood from discoloring over time.

Not at this time.
